The Evolutionary Peak Cambridge Audio has taken the Azur 840 series to its evolutionary peak with the introduction of the 840E high-end preamplifier. The 840E uses Cambridge Audio's new proprietary Terrapin modules for unprecedented audio fidelity. A customizable front panel display means tone controls can be selected and stored by nameable input. Volume, input and tone are also all controlled by highly sophisticated relay driven circuits. "Top-of-its-Class Sound" The Absolute Sound Magazine honored the Cambridge Audio 840E with a "Product of the Year Award" in its January 2009 issue. "Even the inputs are nameable. Of course, none of this would matter if the sound was anything other than top of its class, but it is." Terrapin Technology Rather than use common op-amps for the critical low level gain stages of the 840E, Cambridge Audio decided to design its own audiophile amplifier modules. These unique modules have been designed with single-minded dedication to the very best audio performance possible. Two types exist, the TPA amplifier and TPB buffer module, and they are fully optimized for their respective roles. Nicknamed the Terrapins (because of their 10 pins) these modules add yet another dimension to Cambridge Audio's commitment to audio excellence. Specifically, the Terrapin technology offers lower noise and distortion with excellent channel separation. This obviously gives the most natural sound quality possible, coming from a 'black' background due to low noise and with excellent soundstaging due to the isolated left and right channels. Remarkably Accurate Volume Control A sophisticated resistor ladder and relay-based attenuator for volume (1 dB steps) and balance controls allow remarkably accurate volume control with channel balance. Each channel has its own relays and ladder for superb stereo separation and imaging. This kind of feature is normally the preserve of exotic high-end equipment and is relatively unheard of at this price point.

If you're looking at this product you obviously have a need for it.

Like me, you probably have a sizable LP collection, a nice turntable and cartridge and some audio gear as old as some of the albums ...if not older. Do yourself a favor and get this preamp. If you've been listening to your collection through your 30-40 year old preamp ...and I don't care how state of the art it was back in 1972, like the rest of us, she ain't what she used to be ...hooking your turntable into this little gem *will* bring new life to your records. If you're planning on digitally transferring your LPs then this is an excellent preamp for that purpose.

I was amazed.

My once highly regarded Hafler preamp's phono section has gotten dull over the years ..lost that sparkle, sizzle and pizazz ...it's what happens as the components (capacitors, resistors, et.al.)age and there's not much you can do about it. Except get a new phono preamp ...this one. The Cambridge Audio 540p is well-made and simple in it's design and packs quite a heft for such a small package. There are no controls on it and unless you connect its "wall-wart" power supply to a switched outlet the unit remains on all the time ...a single, tiny blue LED in the center of the face plate your only indication of its power status. The 540p is for moving magnet cartridges only (which is what the great majority of phono cartridges are). If you do have a moving coil cartridge then you'll need the 540p's bigger brother, the 640p, which handles both MM and MC cartridges.

Best bang for the buck.

My vinyl came back to life with shimmering highs, renewed presence and exceptional imaging. It's incredible how good vinyl can sound when you upgrade your equipment. I got my preamp from Spearit Audio through Amazon: best 99 bucks I've spent on audio gear in a long time ...with free shipping to boot. Is it the best preamp out there? No, but you'd have to spend gobs more money to get any major improvements over what the 540p brings to the table. The only thing that would have made the deal even better was to read "Made in the USA" ...or even Japan ...on the little sticker on the back instead of that Communist third-world country.

This little preamp has been highly regarded in reviews from both the print media and consumers ....and don't take my word, check it out yourself online. Add me to the list of satisfied customers. If you're looking for a great replacement phono preamp for your system or for use in digital transfers that sounds beautiful and won't break the piggy bank, then this is the one to get.

what a piece of junk. the phono sound is completely dead and flat, with no matter how much EQ. The line in is totally useless because its always distorted. I looked inside and saw bad solder joints and rust. I would avoid this manufacturer at all costs

Awesome but missing ground wire hook-up

This is a fantastic preamp and I am ecstatic considering the cost of it! My only problem is that the ground wire hook-up, which is pictured to be on the preamp, is not apart of the preamp I got. It's not really issue though I just hook up the wire to left or right channel and the hum is non-existent. I turned on In the Court of the Crimson King--best quality I've had as of yet with this album. Now listening to Dark Side and I'm really digging it. If you're looking low-budget, hit this up.

Put some new "ears" on your rig with one of these hot little preamp kits. Their high gain combined with low noise will improve most any receiver. Fully protected against overload and designed for low current and stable operation they employ high Q tuned circuits which restrict out-of-band signals which can cause intermod blanking and overload of your radio's front-end. Don't be misled by GaAs FET claims! The cheap dual-gate FETs (manufactured for TV tuner usage!) used by others just don't come close to the performance of these preamps designed with NEC microwave transistor devices. Gain is typically 16 to 20 dB and noise figure is 1 dB @ 2 Meters, 1.2 dB @ 220 MHz, and 1.4 dB @ 440 MHz. Compact design for easy installation into most any rig. Operates on 12 to 15 VDC . Product Description
The STMLDA3 is designed for use in quality commercial sound, broadcast and recording applications. The 1.2 k balanced input accepts a wide variety of microphone input levels without loading professional lowimpedance microphones. A multiturn gain trimmer allows precise output level adjustment. The output signal is available on three separate balanced line level outputs. Each output may be connected balanced or unbalanced. RDLs exclusive low noise discrete preamplifier circuitry produces studio quality low noise performance in an economical preamplifier. Dynamic or condenser microphones may be used with the STMLDA3. Standard 24V phantom is supplied to the input when the supply voltage is connected to the PHM terminal. Optimum operating level is set using RDLs unique dual LED VU meter, located adjacent to the terminal block. A green LED illuminates at 15 dB below a 4 dBu output. The intensity of the green LED progresses from minimum to full intensity at 4 dBu. The adjacent red LED illuminates when the operating level exceeds 4. This makes the STMLDA3 easy to set up without any external test equipment, and operating levels may be monitored at the module.
